The following information on the Chabad of New Mexico comes from the "Invitation for Bar Mitzvah of Aaron Aviaz Chaves." Aaron Aviaz Chaves became Bar Mitzvah 16 Kislev 5756 (9 December 1995). In the invitation, Aaron explained some of the practices observed by the Chabad of New Mexico.

From Brooklyn to Tucson

Irwin and Barbara Wernick, [19K] Ida and Alex's children, grew up in Brooklyn, NY. They attended the neighborhood public schools. Most summers were spent avoiding the heat of New York City's streets in bungalow colonies, or "cooch alains," in New York State's "borsht belt" - often referred to as the Catskill Mountains. Sometimes, by working double shifts, Alex could arrange to have a few days off. He then journeyed by railroad to join his family in the "country."

1927 - 1941: A Son and Daughter.

Ida and Alex's first child, a son, Irwin, was born on August 12, 1927 at Bedford Hospital in Brooklyn, NY. The family lived at 102 Tapscott St. but moved several times during the next few years. Six years later, when their daughter, Barbara, was born at Liberty Maternity Hospital on July 1, 1933, they lived at 1700 Sterling Pl. Beginning in 1935 they rented a larger apartment with two bedrooms at 1656 Sterling Place where they remained until 1956.
