Esther Capin (1934-2013) met Richard Capin in 1950 when both were students at UCLA. Like the Capins before him, Richard was a successful businessman and community leader. He passed away in 1989. [Read Esther's and Richard's obituary]

Ms. Capin was a College of Education alumna and member of the college's Advisory Board, received the 2002 Women on the Move Lifetime Achievement Award from the YWCA of Tucson. She was honored for her ongoing community service through many organizations. Capin was the founding chair of the advisory board to the Udall Center for Public Policy Studies, a member the advisory committee for the Women's Studies Millennium Project and a past president of the Arizona Board of Regents.  The College of Education recognized her with its Distinguished Service Award in 2000.

Member of the Arizona Board of Regents, 1978-1992 (SWJA)

In 1978, Ms. Capin was appointed to the Arizona Board of Regents and twice served as President during her 16 year tenure on the Board.  She served on a number of college Advisory Boards at the University of Arizona.  Among her many community activities included participation on the Board of Directors for the Jewish Federation of Southern Arizona, University Medical Center, Santa Cruz Health Planning Council, the Nogales Library board, the Governor’s Commission on the Status of Women, the Arizona Family Planning Council, and the Arizona Humanities Council. Ms. Capin received a Master’s degree in Counseling and a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology.
